Come to Me



I know I've been a bit lax in my blogging lately, but my thoughts have been pretty jumbled. But I'm thankful that His peace passes all understanding, especially my serious lack of understanding of just about anything. But I am continually, continually reminded that our gracious & sovereign God is ALL I need to know, ALL I need for everything. He is more than enough, no matter what may be lacking in life these days. And this song was just a huge reminder of that for me tonight. So I wanted to share it.


"Come to me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Put My yoke upon your shoulders-it might appear heavy at first, but it is perfectly fitted to your curves. Learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble of heart. When you are yoked to Me, your weary souls will find rest. For My yoke is easy, and My burden is light."

“What do you want from me?” The question eeeks out of my brain quicker than I can stop it with better judgement. It’s not a harsh, angry tone—just a sense of exasperation as I sigh and mark an email unread, because I don’t know what to do with it today.  I got a card this weekend from my former supervisor in India, a dear friend. In it was a heart-shaped magnet that said underneath, “I love India.” But that bottom section had been broken off in transit, leaving only the heart left. Lent is: leaning in.

The early-sun stills my heart to sit, this “making room” leftover from Advent,  is now giving birth to Lent— a new season to contemplate the old, a season of dawn: of all of our hopes, retold. But first, it’s dark and the way is long the lengthening of days piling up in fog over my heart that needs hope like oxygen my soul that needs rest, breathing in, breathing out, this sound a melody where old meets new and where I meet You. You, who said that you would come— then waiting came instead; we made our home in it, its easy idols, fingers like fans, in sticky silence, maple syrup on unwashed hands, marveling, reveling like a lark revealing hearts just as dark as the stuff we play in: snuffing out our hope; we succumb to sin. To the one who stayed, and now must return, dear friend,  dear self, You didn't want to stay. Everything within you was ready to go. You were ready. Everything but your bags was packed: your heart, your calling, your identity—stowed away in the treasure boxes you found them in at first. Reburied like sand shuffled under waves of uncertainty, doubt, and the existential lie: did God really say? But you stayed. And even though sometimes you waffle and wonder, you know He asked you to. Every time you thought you heard conflicting words: stay, leave, you were really only hearing yourself.
